Dating back to almost 900 years ago, the word sanguine was originally used to describe the color of blood. Commonly used in the Middle Ages where one’s health and temper was thought to be ruled by bodily liquids, referred to as humors. If any humor ran dominant you were said to be ruled by that humor. Those governed by blood were considered strong, confident, ruddy, ultimately they were sanguine. Through its progression overtime and the phasing out of physiological theories it became commonly used as a descriptor of those who demonstrate specific characteristics.
